This lesson is about drawing a whale. Whale resembles a humongous submarine. It is astounding how tiny a human being is relative to a whale that weights up to several tons! Also, contrary to the intuitive, a whale is not a Fish but a mammal. Whales breastfeed their offspring. Now let's move to drawing a whale.

Step 1

Initial outline of a whale. The outline of a whale looks a lot like that of a submarine, except the back part is raised up high. Draw a fin in the middle. It has relatively complex shape, so I will guide you step by step how to draw it. Add two more lines to your drawing in the manner shown here.

Double-check your whale's proportions. Connect the smooth lines of the whale's body at the tail's fin. Don't press on the pencil too much because you might not get them right on the first try. You don't want your whale to appear "skinny" or "fat", so watch the proportions of this magnificent mammal.

Draw the whale's fins. A whale has a fin on its back, one on each side, and a tail fin. Erase all the unnecessary pencil lines in the area before drawing the fins. Add an eyeball and estimate where its mouth will be.

Work on the whale's head. A whale's mouth is huge and extends literally from one eye to another. It feeds on tiny plankton that inhabits the ocean's surface, for which a whale tirelessly filters the ocean water through the special whiskers inside its mouth. A whale has a white slightly striped belly. Your drawing is almost finished, just shade in some areas and add a few more details to the whale's body.

Final step of drawing a whale. It is not necessary to color this drawing. Shading it in using # 2 pencil will be just fine. Darken the ocean water to convey the depth at which your whale is swimming. When a whale comes up to the surface to fill its lungs with air, it releases a tall stream of water out of the opening on its back. So in case you choose to position your whale near the ocean's surface, add a fountain-like stream coming out of its back.
